Sir:
In reply to your letter of the 9th instant, you are respectfully informed that small amounts of gold have, for a long series of years, been obtained from mines in Virginia. The annual average for the entire State for the last ten years being about $5,000.
It is understood that small quantities of gold have been found in Spotsylvania and Stafford [counties].
