The flowing waters near the Rye Patch Reservoir.

    ROCKY GOLD CANYON

Rocky Gold Canyon is a 20 acre placer claim in the famous nugget-shooting and placer district of Rye Patch, Nevada. While most recreational placer claims in this district are found on the west side of the Rye Patch Reservoir, this unique 20 acre placer claim is in the actual district boundaries, located on the east side of the reservoir along a tributary creek flowing through a rocky canyon.

The surrounding areas are largely blanket claimed by major mining companies, fortunately however there is only one other claim along this creek.

Every handful will yield you black sands, and multiple placer gold pockets are easily found in the low pressure zones under small waterfalls, bends.  The decomposing granite serves as bedrock, often times just a few inches to a foot under the waters surface.

You'll see from the picture below a decent amount of water flow.  You can expect this claim to stay wet through the middle of summer.  However, since it is not spring fed this is a seasonal creek where you'll have your best mining in Spring - Early Summer months!

    How to Mine It

The Rocky Gold Placer claim going to be perfect for a small sluice box, gold pans, metal detecting.

Much of the creek is open to just walk up to, wade in and start panning for gold.  Other parts likely have never been accessed, and are covered with tick brush.

Personally when we first visited this claim we had a hard time making it through all the brush!  A decent path following alongside the creek.  After about an hour and a half of chainsawing and trimming hedges the path is much more clear, and even opens up into some decent camping spots along the creek.  We've also build a few rock bridges to cross the creek.

This 20 acre placer mining claim is just a stones throw away from Rye Patch Reservoir, which provides camping accommodations, lake access, fishing, food, water, snacks, gas.
