The Wolf Creek claims are two, adjacent 17-acre placer miner claims, just a mile South of Greenville, California! Situated on the Wolf Creek, these claims find themselves taking gold from the faults the Wolf Creek naturally runs across, pushing fresh gold downstream every day the waters flow!

The area suffered from the Dixie Fire back in 2021, so you'll notice most of the trees in the area have char and fire-scarring. However, because of this burn, most of the ground-hugging vegetation was greatly reduced, allowing new rock to fall into and be washed by the high-volume Wolf Creek over the past several years. With all the rock falling into the river, the chances of having several new feet in depth of sluice-able material running down to the bedrock of the river is extremely high. 

Only recently has the vegetation started to come back in force with fresh nutrients provided by the fire, restoring the natural beauty of the area after giving up its held treasures. The serenity of the area is unmatched -- a natural calm provided from the fire, even years later, is almost eerie if not for its incredible stillness and peace it seems to give. With the babble of the brook, the spot makes an amazing campsite.

A Short History of Wolf Creek

The Wolf Creek has a rich history of gold mining that dates back to the 1860s. The Creek and its tributaries have been known to produce plenty of gold, and many little placer mines have popped up throughout time to capture some of these flaky treasures. Greenville has been plagued by wildfires, however, so the longevity of these mines only last until the next fire comes to wipe the town out again.

Because of this, the Round Valley, and consequently Wolf Creek, didn't last long as a miner's haven, despite the richness it held. As the town and its services burned away, along with all the miners' cabins, it took the wind right out of the sails of seemingly every fortune-finder! You can still see the relics of what they left behind on-site.

But just because fire chased the old generations away doesn't mean the gold skedaddled away with them! The river still flows, and the gold remains...

Here are some highlights surrounding the Wolf Creek:

• High Banks and High-Flow - A high mountain placer, the Wolf Creek has carved a deep channel in the mountain with its high-flow from the Round Valley Reservoir. These high-banks create a unique opportunity to mine the walls of the channel provided by the river, and with plenty of water!
• A Burn-Scarred, Phoenix Claim - The Wolf Creek is a "Phoenix Claim", a historical gold-producer rising from the ashes to come back to life! Fire chased the old miners out, but the gold refreshes itself with every fire! With the latest 2021 fire, the Wolf Creek's cool, refreshing waters are ready to be panned once again.
• Historically Significant - From the 1860s on, miners have taken great interest in the Round Valley. The town of Greenville holds onto this history, of which you can learn all about it before heading up to make some history of your own!
• Diverse Geology - Highway 89, known as the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway, gives hints to how volcanically active this area used to be. Where lava used to flow now flows the Wolf Creek, and it continues to take from the geologically diverse, fractured and faulted ground it runs over - as far as three miles South - to deliver fresh gold right into your pan.
