Alaska's Mineral Industry

The Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys tracks and reports on Alaska's mineral industry, in accordance with Alaska Statue 27.05.050-060 .
Alaska hosts a significant share of the world's defined mineral resources, including approximately 7 % of zinc resources, 7 % of gold resources, 7 % of silver resources, 12 % of copper resources, 16 % of molybdenum resources, 2 % of lead resources, and 17 % of coal resources.
More than 7,400 documented mineral occurrences attest to the state's diverse geology and metallogenic provinces. Alaska has the potential to produce 51 of 54 critical minerals identified by the U.S. Geological Survey, including graphite, germanium, platinum group elements, rare earth elements, cobalt, nickel, tin, and antimony.
The global mining industry consistently recognizes Alaska as a premier investment destination. The 2024 Fraser Institute annual survey of mining companies ranked Alaska third globally for overall investment attractiveness and first the world for mineral potential independent of other considerations ( Mejia and Aliakbari, 2025 ).
DGGS tracks Alaska's mineral industry, including annual spending on exploration
Alaska's mines produced metal worth $4 billion in 2024, accounting for about 12 percent of the U.S. total metal production.
The Red Dog Mine in northwestern Alaska is one of the world's largest zinc mines. It is the U.S.'s largest zinc producer and the only U.S. mine producing germanium.
The Greens Creek Mine in southeastern Alaska is the largest silver producer in the U.S. The mine also produces zinc, lead, gold and copper.
Six operating lode mines, and approximately 150 active placer mines, produce Alaska's most famous mineral commodity, gold. Fort Knox, Pogo, and Manh Choh mines (Interior Alaska) and Kensington, Greens Creek, and Dawson mines (Southeast Alaska) are major employers and taxpayers in their respective communities. Lode gold production from Alaska's mines recently reached 750,000 troy ounces.

Context and takeaways added by the Mountain Man Mining team to help you use this document.
- Alaska is a major U.S. gold producer, with output from large lode mines and placer operations; these DGGS annual reports compile statewide production and exploration year by year.
- The reports track commodities from gold and zinc to emerging rare earths, giving a longitudinal view of where Alaskan mineral activity is trending.
- Annual state-survey data help prospectors spot active districts, but historical production never guarantees open ground—confirm current claim and land status first.
