With history dating to the 1870s, the Turkey Creek Mining District saw decades of work from nearly a hundred mines and thousands of prospectors, tapering off only under wartime governmental pressure during WWII. The Marigold and Bumblebee claims sat surrounded by dozens of past-producing mines — the War Eagle, Gold Note, Roach, La Plata Grande and Trinity mines among them — all chasing gold, silver and copper along the same fault channel, where intrusive plutonic bodies (granodiorite, gabbro-diorite, quartz-monzonite) meet meta-volcanic and meta-sedimentary rock.

Outside of mining, the claims held a curiosity: prospectors in the area reported finding an old tombstone inscribed with the date 1802, and a large stone bearing petroglyphs nearby. The surrounding Potato Patch valley is dotted with homesteads whose land and homes were purchased with gold and silver mined from below their own foundations decades earlier.
