Abandoned Gold Mines Near Me:

The Preacher's Cabin

Having a cabin to stay in while you mine for gold is the dream!  This cabin exists on BLM land and is occasionally occupied by hunters and miners a few times a year.  The Preacher's Cabin has been regularly maintained and is water tight for the wet months. It's one of the few abandoned gold mines near me with a beautiful historic cabin on its site that features:

  • Indoor Wood Stove for Heat!
  • 2 Twin Beds with Mattresses
  • Original wooden table and chair
  • Two dressers
  • Year round fresh water spring 1.5 miles away
  • Shade trees
  • Outdoor cook stove/campfire
  • Outhouse
  • Isolated near Tule Summit just outside of Tule Canyon
  • Misc. supplies, chopped wood, food, water are all stocked in the cabin now.
  • And lots more!

Apart of owning the 20 acre placer claim this cabin sits on is regularly maintaining the cabin for it's historical significance.  Once owned by the "One Eyed Swede" the story goes he'd return to town (Gold Point) once a month with a jar of gold.  Figuring his gold was coming from somewhere near his cabin, people have been looking for the Swede's secret deposit of placer within walking distance of the cabin for years!  I might have a good idea where....

The preachers cabin is located down a dirt road, tucked snugly in the mountains near Tule' Summit.  Lots of mining activity can be found all around the cabin including both placer and lode mines!  Dozens of tailings piles, creeks, mining relics like old an old crane, trommel, ore bins and ol'mill sites can be found within a few miles from the cabin.

The story goes that when the "One Eyed Sweed" owned the cabin he stayed out there all alone for some 10 years.  Supported himself from a secret placer deposit nearby.  Once every month or so he'd return to Gold Point with a little jar, trade it for supplies then go back to mining in solitude.  Of course, when he got to drinkin' he got to preachin' and thus caught him the nickname The Preacher.
You can see from the pictures below it's a well maintained cabin and is one of the finest abandoned gold mines near me I've seen.
Something good to stay in a few days at a time maybe.  Bring your dry-washers, recirculating sluices, metal detectors and take a stab at finding the One Eyed Sweeds old secret placer deposit nearby.
All I can tell you is there is a path leading directly out the back of the cabin.  And another old path that cuts off the main road to the west that goes into an ancient alluvial fan at elevation.
